The Galician System for the Protection of Minors’ attends to hundreds of youngsters in residential resources of diverse nature: foster family homes, day centres, supervised residences and transition-to-independent living facilities. This system requires professionals in social fields, trained to support the youngsters from the perspective of their emancipation.

Also, every day more and more minors face the fulfilment of judicial measures. It is necessary to emphasize empowerment and autonomy in order to transform this passage through the judicial system into a learning opportunity. Besides, the increase in the rates of school absenteeism also requires cooperation between experts in social disciplines and educators.

Objectives and methodology

The Master’s degree is aimed at training specialists in the fields of autonomy and emancipation for youngsters in transition from out-of-home facilities, ex-warded, in custody, under judicial measures and with school absenteeism problems. Its specific objectives are:

  • Acquiring the necessary skills to support and promote the autonomy and emancipation of young people in social conflict.
  • Enabling the participants to take on the management and functioning of residential resources for youngsters in social conflict.
  • Full knowledge of the minor’s protection and minors’ reform system in Galicia.

Theoretical classes will take place in the Faculty of Educational Sciences of the USC every Wednesday and Thursday, in sessions from 16.00 to 21.00, and Friday, in sessions from 16.00 to 20.00, between October, 2014 and June, 2015.

The contents are divided into five central areas: Introduction Module; Legal Area; Educational Area; Entities’ Management Area and Area of resources and public policies. The teaching staff is composed by specialists from different State universities and by professionals with proven experience in the field of youth and autonomy.

Practices and job opportunities

The practices programme comprises 594 working hours, out of which 354 will be carried out in Galician residential resources and centres of education, in the mainframe of the Mentor and Aleida programs developed by Igaxes3 and the Fundación Trébol de Iniciativa Social. In this fourth edition, practices will be also be offered in projects developed by Fundación Meniños.

At the end of the course, the students will have access to job opportunities in which Igaxes3 it will offer 8 three-month contracts with an option to be employed at projects developed by the entity and the Fundación Trébol de Iniciativa Social.
